Introduction
One of the most copied concepts in the App Store is the tower defense genre. The genre, made famous by the Warcraft 3 community, feels like it has been designed solely for touch screen, even though the initial versions were only playable on a PC with a mouse. Artem Kotov, who seems to be a huge fan of the game Defense Zone that he made himself, has recreated the first version of this game using the original ruleset, without the option to temporarily power up your towers and having to pay money for upgrades. This version has turned out great, and I will tell you why.

Gameplay
In most tower defense games you set up your towers next to a path and you wait for the hordes of enemies to walk by them. They can’t get to the exit of the level, or you will lose lives and eventually, if too many enemies come through, you will lose the game. Waves become increasingly harder and you will have to keep building new towers if you want to keep up with the increasing strength of the enemy.

For each enemy you kill you get money. You use this currency to buy new towers and upgrade them to stronger versions of said tower.
Having said all this, compared to other tower defense games, the maps in Defense Zone are HUGE and you will have to scroll around and zoom in and out to get the best overview of the battlefield.
Content
First of all, I have to say the game looks awesome. Even though the developer has chosen for a top-down view as in most tower defense games, everything, from the models used to the explosions, is a feast for the eye. All of this runs without any stutter and almost no loading times. Content-wise I have no complaints either. With six different towers to use, each with their own pros and cons, you will have a big enough arsenal to tackle the biggest and baddest waves. These towers unlock while you progress through the different levels, of which the game sports 10, and each level has its own distinct theme.

Conclusion
Defense Zone – Original is an old school take on a game that is ramping up to the third iteration in the series. If you haven’t played the original, I can definitely suggest playing this one, as it’s the way the game was originally intended to be. With beautiful graphics, great gameplay. and a lot of content it is unlikely you will get bored any time soon and with full compatibility on both iPad and iPhone you don’t really have any reason not to try this game. The game only needs about 61 MB, which is impressive for a game with such graphical prowess.
